What to expect in a prenatal barre class.

Finding the right workout during pregnancy can feel overwhelming. Maybe you're wondering if it's safe to exercise. Maybe your body is changing faster than you expected, and your old workout doesn't feel quite right anymore. Or maybe you're simply looking for a place where you can move, breathe, and feel like yourself for an hour.

If that's you, welcome. 😃
Our Prenatal Barre workshop series is designed to help you stay strong, mobile, and connected to your changing body throughout pregnancy. Whether you're newly pregnant or counting down the final weeks before meeting your baby, here's exactly what you can expect in a prenatal barre class at Barre West.

Is Prenatal Barre Safe?

For most healthy pregnancies, exercise is not only safe, it's encouraged. Current guidelines recommend regular physical activity throughout pregnancy, provided your healthcare provider hasn't advised otherwise. Our prenatal barre classes are specifically designed with pregnancy in mind. Every movement is thoughtfully modified to support your changing body, reduce unnecessary strain, and help you move with confidence. As always, we recommend checking with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program during pregnancy.

You Don't Need Any Barre Experience

One of the biggest misconceptions about barre is that you need to be a dancer. YOU DON’T.

Many of our prenatal clients have never stepped foot in a barre studio before. Our instructors guide you through every movement, offer modifications throughout class, and encourage you to work at the pace that feels right for your body that day. Pregnancy isn't the time to push through discomfort, it's the time to listen to your body.

We'll help you do exactly that.

Every Class Is Designed for Your Changing Body

No two pregnancies are the same. Some days you'll feel energized. Other days, walking up the stairs feels like a workout.

Our instructors understand that pregnancy changes from week to week, and sometimes from hour to hour. That's why prenatal barre focuses on movement that supports you rather than challenges you to "push harder."

Depending on your stage of pregnancy, your instructor may offer modifications for:

  • Core exercises

  • Balance work

  • Standing positions

  • Range of motion

  • Rest breaks

  • Equipment options

The goal isn't to keep up with everyone else. The goal is to leave class feeling stronger than when you walked in.

What Does a Prenatal Barre Class Look Like?

While every instructor brings their own style, most prenatal barre classes include:

Gentle Warm-Up

You'll begin by waking up the body with controlled movements that improve circulation, mobility, and posture.

Strength Training That Supports Pregnancy and Postpartum

Using light weights, body weight, resistance bands, and the barre itself, you'll build functional strength that supports you through every stage of pregnancy and into life with your new baby. Our prenatal classes focus on strengthening the muscles you'll rely on most during pregnancy, labor, recovery, and everyday motherhood, including:

  • Glutes and hips for pelvic stability

  • Strong legs to support your growing body

  • Upper back and shoulders for carrying your baby and improving posture

  • Deep core muscles that stabilize your spine

  • The pelvic floor, which plays an essential role during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery

Rather than traditional abdominal exercises, we teach pregnancy-safe core strategies that help you maintain strength while minimizing excess pressure through the abdominal wall. You'll learn how to engage your deep core and pelvic floor together so they can better support your body before, during, and after delivery.

Balance and Stability

As your center of gravity changes, balance can feel different than it used to. Using the barre for support allows you to safely build stability while maintaining confidence in your movements.

Stretching and Mobility

Pregnancy places extra demands on your muscles and joints. Gentle stretching and mobility work can help relieve common areas of tension, especially in the hips, lower back, chest, and shoulders.

Breathwork for Pregnancy, Labor, and Recovery

One of the most valuable skills you'll practice in prenatal barre isn't a movement at all - it's your breath.

Throughout class, our instructors teach breathing techniques that help you connect your diaphragm, deep core, and pelvic floor. Learning how these muscles work together can improve stability during pregnancy while helping you move more efficiently through everyday activities.

We also incorporate breathing strategies that can be incredibly helpful during labor. Intentional breathwork can help you stay calm, manage tension, and work with your body during contractions rather than fighting against them.

Just as importantly, these breathing patterns continue to support your recovery after birth. Reconnecting your breath with your core and pelvic floor is one of the first steps toward rebuilding strength postpartum, and many of our clients appreciate learning these techniques before they ever need them.

Our goal isn't simply to help you exercise during pregnancy, it's to give you tools that support you through pregnancy, labor, birth, and the months that f

The Benefits of Prenatal Barre

While every pregnancy is different, many clients tell us they notice:

  • Better posture as their belly grows

  • Less back and hip discomfort

  • Increased strength and endurance

  • Improved balance

  • Better body awareness

  • Reduced stress

  • More energy throughout the week

Perhaps most importantly, they leave feeling more connected to their bodies during a season of constant change.

Can I Join at Any Stage of Pregnancy?

Many clients join us during their first, second, or third trimester. Your instructor will offer modifications based on where you are in your pregnancy, and we'll encourage you to communicate how you're feeling before class begins.

Some days your body may ask for more movement. Some days it may ask for more rest. Both are completely okay.

More Than Just a Workout

One of the things our prenatal clients love most isn't actually the exercise. It's the community.

There's something comforting about being surrounded by other women experiencing many of the same milestones, questions, and changes. Whether you're celebrating your first ultrasound, preparing for maternity leave, or counting kicks between exercises, you're among people who understand.

Many friendships begin in prenatal classes and continue long after babies arrive.

Your First Class Doesn't Have to Feel Intimidating

Trying something new while pregnant can feel vulnerable. We understand.
Our instructors are here to answer questions, guide you through every movement, and make sure you feel supported from the moment you walk through the door.

You don't have to know what you're doing.
You don't have to be "fit enough."
You simply have to show up.

We'll take care of the rest. Ready to experience prenatal barre? We'd love to welcome you to Barre West and help you stay strong, supported, and confident throughout your pregnancy - sign up for a prenatal barre series here.
